City by Keiichi Arawi is a surreal slice-of-life comedy with delightfully low stakes and a small army of offbeat characters.
I was at my local library when a set of unusual-looking manga caught my attention, with glossy white covers and characters that looked much more cartoonish than the typically statuesque heroes of shonen and shojo. This is City by Keiichi Arawi, a surreal slice-of-life comedy set in the fictional "City,” full of zany yet relatable characters, each part of the interconnected narrative of their bustling community tapestry.
The main characters of City are trio of students attending Mont Blac University: Midori Nagumo, a sophomore with uncanny physical aptitude but who is comically incapable of holding onto money and is forced to work at a local restaurant to pay off her debts; Ayume Nikura, a freshman and childhood friend of Nagumo’s who hopes to become a professional photographer (and that Nagumo will one day pay back all the money she loaned her), and Wako Izumi, a quirky sophomore who only met Nagumo and Nikura recently, but begins showing up at surprising moment to help get Nagumo and Nikura out of, or into, strange situations.
What kind of situations, you ask? Weird ones.
