I wasn't supposed to attend SPX, the 32-year small press expo event in Bethesda, MD, though I happened to be in Washington D.C. for a wedding. Two actually. Both meticulously planned, and beautiful. So it's fitting that I sought out and wrote about beautiful wedding comics for today's dispatch.

Wedding Juice and Other Melodramas, the 2026 Ignatz Award winner for outstanding series, is a collection of short stories from the life of Sanika Phawde. It also helped me process things I hadn't even realized about the experience of my own Indian wedding. The book's first issue begins with a fairly simple introduction of herself by way of a video call with parents discussing the upcoming wedding. Her father is talking about a delicious juice that happens to have an ingredient Phawde is allergic to (Kiwi) – and he's really selling it.

Neither me or my wife could eat a single thing at our own wedding other than the specially prepared dishes we'd requested. It's something we always laugh about, bonding over our dietary restrictions. And many time later remembering the hand waving comments about dairy intolerances ("but its such a beautiful cake!") as well as various allergies. Semi-related, I also skipped out on the last hour of the lovely Indian wedding I was in town for (the second ceremony) to attend the expo. Just the lunch portion, which I assumed (rightly) there would be few options – a detail Phawde found amusing when I met her briefly.
